This latest report, written by Acclimatise and sponsored by IBM , is the third in the series and focuses on Oil and Gas companies worldwide. It was launched on the 3rd November, 2009. Many reports discuss the vital area of mitigation; how companies and organisations can reduce their carbon emissions. However, it is essential that we also consider how we need to adapt to the inevitable climate change from past emissions. This series of reports explores the adaptation challenge based on companies' responses to the Carbon Disclosure Project 2008 questionnaire.
Using the Acclimatisation Index methodology which enables a semi-quantitative analysis of the responses and drawing upon other published material and resources, this report provides an overview of some of the challenges that inevitable climate change brings to the Oil and Gas industry. Although the report concentrates on publicly listed international oil companies (IOCs), the potential impacts identified are applicable to national oil companies (NOCs).
In the report you will find commentary on:
- the changing risk landscape for the world’s oil and gas companies - is the sector fully assessing their current and future business models and supply chains to ensure their resilience to inevitable climate change?
- whether the current reported value of proved reserves takes into account the full impact of a changing climate? - some examples of the potential impacts on proved reserves and other assets.
- chronic vs. acute events - are companies mainly focusing their risk management activities on extreme (acute) events and not fully recognising the risks posed by incremental (chronic) climate change?
As in the other reports in the series, it includes a set of 10 Prepare-Adapt questions to help senior executives consider the different aspects of climate change and the need to adapt.
