Overview of Software Group in Ireland

Software Group in Ireland develops and supports three main brands: Information Management, Lotus and Tivoli. There are 3 IBM Ireland Labs located in Dublin, Cork and Galway. Information Management and Lotus products are developed and supported by the lab in Dublin and Tivoli Netcool by the labs in Cork and Galway. The functional areas include development, test and systems test, localisation, support, lab services and performance. There is also a team involved in High Performance Computing working on IBM Deep Computing Visualisation, IBM Dynamic Application Virtualization and support research on Ireland's first Blue Gene supercomputer.

INFORMATION MANAGEMENT:

Industry Models and Assets:

Location: IBM Technology Campus, Mulhuddart, Dublin

Function:

The Industry Models & Assets Lab is part of the Information Management division and is responsible for the development of IBM's portfolio of Industry Model products for the Banking, Insurance, Financial Markets, Health Plan, Telco and Retail industries.

These models are used by large companies to help drive large transformation projects such as Data Warehousing, Core Systems Transformation and Business Process Reengineering - in recent years a significant part of the business has been driven by Risk & compliance initiatives such as Basel II & Solvency II.

Products:

The team also does a significant amount of work integrating the models with Rational Data Architect (RDA), Rational Software Architect (RSA) and WebSphere Business Modeller (WBM) and is building out the next generation of the models by customising these platforms with Eclipse plug-ins.

In addition to the development team there is a Lab Services team providing consulting WW in relation to the customisation and implementation of the Industry Models and some sales and pre-sales resources based in Dublin.

There is also a WebSphere Lab Services team focused on the development of Wholesale Payments solutions for the Banking and FM industries - most notably the Enterprise Payments Platform (EPP) solution.

FileNet Enterprise Content Management (ECM)

Filenet ECM is part of the Information Management brand. In Ireland, the team is involved in: Order Administration, Globalization/Localization and EMEA Customer Support Centre. The ECM Support Center provides support to our customers and Business Partners in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) and Latin America.

LOTUS

Location: IBM Technology Campus, Mulhuddart, Dublin

Function:

In the Lotus Development Centre teams are developing and testing a range of software such as Lotus Connections, composite applications, XPages, IBM Learning Accelerator, Bluehouse (Software as a Service), Languageware, Lotus Workforce Management, Unified Communications and more.

IBM Software Services for Lotus is a Pan-EMEA Lotus Services team, providing technical consultancy for EMEA and Irish customers. The primary focus is consulting services for Lotus products developed in the Dublin Lab. The team is composed of subject matter experts in the field of application design and integration, portal architecture, change management and customer relationship management.

The Lotus Customer Support Centre provides technical support to large customers across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). The centre provides support for a range of products including Lotus Notes/Domino, Lotus Sametime, Quickplace/QuickR, Websphere Portal and Lotus Connections. Support is provided to customers who have purchased licences and maintenance under the Passport Advantage program. In addition higher level support is provided to customers who have bought Premium Support contracts.

Products:

Lotus Connections is social software to enable organisations utilise the collective knowledge of employees, partners, and customers by dynamically building new connections between people, the information they know, and the tasks they are executing.

Composite Applications in Lotus Notes are business style mash-ups - providing a unified interface of business applications or components.

The XPages team are working on Domino web application revitalisation, technology in Domino server.

IBM Learning Accelerator - A Websphere Portal based enterprise level e-learning application which allows for the delivery and tracking of online or classroom based training. The team is responsible for development and test end-to-end.

"Bluehouse" - IBM's first move into the SAAS (Software as a service) space. The suite of products are primarily targeted at small and medium businesses of which there are 67 million globally. IBM will host everything for the customer so they do not need to worry about their IT infrastructure. The suite of products including Activities, Forms, Sametime, Contacts, Webconferencing and Store and Share will provide real business value by firstly offering core product functionality but more importantly by enabling companies to collaborate with other companies who are signed up to Bluehouse.

LanguageWare is a set of software libraries, APIs, language resources, and tooling, that allows any application analyze natural language text. Deployed in simple-to-use integration packages that satisfy any type of application development environment.

Portal Solutions:
This product group develops Lotus Workforce Management (LWM). LWM allows employees/managers to conduct HR self service tasks through an IBM WebSphere® Portal which interfaces with an SAP HR backend. LWM is build using Websphere Portlet Factory resulting in an easily extensible flexible accelerator that can be easily customized by IBM services.

Unified Communications:
The Unified Communications team work on developing real-time collaboration technologies which give users access multiple communication modes (e.g. voice, video, text, graphics) from within a single unified interface. The team in Dublin are working on three distinct parts of the product portfolio:

  1. The Sametime Unified Telephony team are working on a product which will enable tight integration of Sametime with multiple telephony services from different vendors.
  2. The Sametime Advanced team are working on extensions to the Sametime server to enable better communication between communities (i.e. persistent chat rooms, broadcasts, polling etc).
  3. The Meetings team are working on enhancements to the eMeeting servers. These enhancements will show up in both the Sametime server which is sold to customers to run on their own premises and in the Sametime Unyte service which will be provided as a hosted service to our customers.

System Test and Lab Admin:
This group supports the System Verification Testing of a range of Lotus products - ranging from Notes Domino and Sametime to Quickr, LWM, Connections, Learning and more recently have been involved with Apollo and Mashup Maker at Test Architect level.

The main area of expertise in Dublin in SVT is Reliability, Installability and deployment of the above products and the team have been involved with several customer engagements related to these products including several Proof of Concept trials and projects under Unleash the Lab programme. The Lab Admin covers the support of over 450 servers in 4 labs. The hardware is mainly xSeries, pSeries and Blade Centres.

TIVOLI

Locations: There are two locations developing and supporting Tivoli products in Cork and Galway

Function:
The team in Cork and Galway are responsible for definition, development, test and support of the Tivoli-Netcool Wireless product portfolio. They sell these products to wireless operators around the world and own the full end to end product development lifecycle, which requires a very close interaction with the Netcool overlay Sales team on a global basis.

Tivoli Netcool Performance Manager for Wireless
This product does performance analytics for wireless network infrastructure. Specifically, it looks for performance problems in the networks ability to support the call volume being presented by mobile phones

Tivoli Netcool Service Quality Manager
This product does analytics of Services delivered over the network be it IP, wireless etc. Examples of the services monitord include VPN, IPTV.... Specifically it looks for problems with the Service as delivered by the network, an example would be measuring jitter for an IPTV service.

Tivoli Netcool Customer Experience Manager
A sister product to TNSQM that looks at Service Quality from a customer perspective.

The competencies in the group in Ireland range from marketing to product management, development, QA, support, professional services and pre-sales.

High Performance Computing

The High Performance Computing group is part of Systems and Technology Group. There are three main focus areas

  1. Cell B.E. and BlueGene application development, porting/tuning and benchmarking.The Blue Gene applications team provides technical pre-sales bid support and scientific support for Collaborative research. Team has access to BlueGene L and P hardware in Ireland.
  2. IBM Deep Computing Visualization- a high performance, visual computing middle ware that enables secure and remote scalable graphics on IBM commodity hardware.
  3. IBM Dynamic Application Virtualization which provides the ability to off-load function calls in a compute intensive application to remote high performance computation node
