Advanced Water Management
Encompasses a broad agenda from availability and quality to distribution and consumption. Our technology and expertise can help water utilities, agencies, and private industry improve water quality and water system performance. By collaborating with clients to provide them more accurate and timelier data on water operations, IBM can help clients proactively manage provisioning for human, industrial, and agricultural consumption leveraging tools like IBM Deep Thunder. Understanding weather impact on water management can help optimize the management of complex water environments.
Offerings
The Center for Water Excellence
Leverages innovative services (e.g. real-time monitoring and inline analysis of biological water parameters such as e.coli and cryptosporidium)for monitoring, managing and forecasting environmental challenges. These findings are presented in a real time, tailored solution.
The success of any monitoring programme depends ultimately on providing feedback on water status to the general public, policy makers and particularly to stakeholders involved in implementing proactive measures.
IBM’s offering can proactively monitor and predict the utility. This in turn enables modelling future events in the echo system by honing IBM’s deep expertise in integrated systems & modelling. The ability to control and manage an extended water network opens up new possibilities for local water authorities, and is a distinct departure from segmented regional approaches. With the capability to present real-time data from an integrated scalable system in an intelligent and intuitive interface stakeholders can gain a deep insight into real time events. For example, IBM can combine water flow monitoring data with climate data using client specific business rules; producing valuable predictive statistics and thus create predictive and preventative modelling.
Proactive direct observation of environmental conditions can enable the use of statistical techniques to identify and predict environmental issues. Providing a clearer picture of what areas require direct targeted investment. The benefit to stakeholders being the ability to optimise infrastructural investments and support a safer and cleaner environment.
The goal of the Water Centre of Excellence is to partner with clients to drive innovation, achieving economic benefits for the business and reducing the impact on the environment. IBM is committed to environmental leadership in all of its business activities. For further information see

Smarter Water Management
With advances in technology—sophisticated sensor networks, smart meters, deep computing and analytics—we can be smarter about how we manage our planet's water. We can monitor, measure and analyze entire water ecosystems, from rivers and reservoirs to the pumps and pipes in our homes. We can give all the people, organizations, businesses, communities and nations dependent on a continuing supply of freshwater—that is, all of us—a single, reliable, up-to-the-minute and actionable view of water use. But that's just the first drop.
Water Quality&Flooding
IBM are monitoring and integrating data from various water quality sites throughout Ireland. During the recent flooding in Cork the release of water from the Inniscarra dam resulted in large amount of sediment being released. IBM has installed an autonomous real-time water quality sensor in the Inniscarra region.
