Sensors

IBM’s Smarter planet views the world as instrumented, interconnected and intelligent. Sensors are how we “instrument” the world and IBM has been involved in the development of new sensor technology through collaboration with CLARITY (Centre for sensor web technologies).

Recently, IBM's Centre of Excellence in Water Management have worked on SmartBay which is the next generation of advanced coastal and marine monitoring and management. One aspect of SmartBay was integrating the cyber-physical environment. IBM developed an embedded sensor platform (in collaboration with CLARITY) to measure phosphate levels. The advanced embedded sensor platforms are based on hardware that is ultra low power and embedded software builds IBM technology (e.g. J9 JVM, Lotus Expeditor components, MQ Microbroker). This platform has been developed to push intelligence down to the sensor level where real-time decision making can take place and this demonstrates how IBM can interconnect instruments and make them “intelligent”.

Sensor

  • IBM hardware: ultra low power, single-board computer, real-time clock (Arcom Viper)
  • IBM embedded software: (J9 JVM, Lotus Expeditor components, MQ Microbroker, …)
  • Embedded adaptive application code developed by CLARITY based on AgentFactory.
