Weighing fruits and vegetables can slow down supermarket checkout lines. To speed them up, IBM created a camera-scale that can identify fruit and vegetable types by sight, while simultaneously weighing them and calculating total cost.
Urban areas unblocked with new traffic scheme
With ever-increasing traffic problems, the Swedish Road Administration needed a solution that would cut congestion in the city of Stockholm. In January 2006 a trial scheme was introduced that uses infra-red cameras to record car number plates and bills owners automatically.
Supercomputer on a chip
IBM has jointly created what has been called a supercomputer on a chip. In many cases "Cell", based on Power Architecture, is 10 times more powerful than the latest PC industry chip. And it's expected to transform everything from consumer electronics to medical imaging to aerospace.
