IBM Research and Development – Ireland

Overview

Our Lab

The IBM Research and Development –Ireland was established in July 2010. It's one of eleven research laboratories worldwide. The lab is located on IBM's Dublin Technology Campus, on the outskirts of the city. Although a young lab, it has been growing steadily and today there is in excess of 50 staff, the majority of which are PhD's. The plan is to grow the lab to 200 technical and research staff.

Our People

"IBM researchers are united in a passion to make the world work better, dedicated to creating an impact for clients and IBM, collaborating to change the way the world works, and discovering the answers to our greatest challenges". Dr. John E. Kelly III IBM Senior Vice President and Director of IBM Research

Our Projects

Researchers at IBM Research and Development –Ireland are focussed on four main themes, (i) Smart Cities Technology Centre where researchers concentrate on advancing science and technology for intelligent urban and environmental systems, with a current focus on creating analytics, optimizations, and systems for sustainable energy, constrained resources (e.g., municipal water management), transportation, and the underlying city fabric that assimilates and shares data and models for these domains. (ii) Risk Management, making risk management scalable, robust, and interpretable to a broad set of users. (iii) Exascale, research into simulation, performance modelling, workload optimisation and HPC consumability. (iv) Next Generation Systems, Prism and hybrid computing.

Collaboration is central to our culture and as such the IBM Research and Development –Ireland team works closely with city authorities, universities, small and large businesses as well as experts from across IBM's globally integrated organisation to develop new paradigms in making city systems connected, sustainable and smart.
