This page contains information on a selection of the activities used in previous
Young Visions and Bright Sparks events prior to 2004.
Blackboard and chalk have had their day! IBM's Concept Mapper technology was
used at the 2001 event to brainstorm ideas in a guided discussion of the Olympic
Games' website.
This competitive activity, supported by IBM's Message Centre, involved
transmitting and retransmitting a message using various forms of communication
technology, eg. spoken, written, email, fax. The aim is to for it to reach its
final destination as close to its original form as possible.
The Internet is becoming an increasingly major part of modern business practice
yet it is not inherently secure. Encryption technologies act as the locks and
keys of cyberspace, and prevent Internet communication and commerce from
becoming as public as mailing a post card. In this activity teams raced to
decrypt encrypted messages.
This was a competitive trading game using novel software and IBM WorkPads. This
activity, supported by the Hursley Services and Technology department,
demonstrated the growing importance of asynchronous transactions and keeping
mobile employees in sync.
Hidden robots were guided around a maze to solve various puzzles.
Teams of battling robots were created and controlled.
Teams made the most of limited resources to build a model bridge.
Teams performed operations in binary to match computer calculations.
Speech recognition allowed students to defuse virtual mines.
