• What it involves

  Our IT Consultants work within IBM Global Business Services and work with clients who are seeking help and advice about business and IT problems. Work as an IT consultant tends to be project based. A typical project could be on a client site working as a business analyst to help gather and define client requirements, such as how their website will look. Or you could be working as part of the development team responsible for building the technical solution for the client.

  The first role you have is dependant upon the projects that are ongoing at the time and the stages that these projects are in. Typically you will be on your first assignment for 3-6 months before moving onto another different assignment (and often another client) which will allow you to gain exposure to another aspect of the work that we do.

• What we look for

  You will need a keen interest in business and technology and want to work with clients to solve their business problems. You must be meticulous and logical in your work, have excellent problem solving, teamworking and interpersonal skills. You must also have a flexible attitude to working patterns as periods of working away from home is often required. Technical expertise and previous relevant work experience is unnecessary as we will provide you with all the technical training required.

• Training

  You will begin your IBM career with our new hire induction program, lasting several weeks. You will be given an introduction to technology fundamentals, consulting skills and project management skills. For 2 weeks of your induction, you will participate in a simulated project focussing on client facing and project management skills.

  You will be assigned a Professional Development Manager (PDM) in Foundation. You will put together an individually tailored training programme with your PDM which will include specific technical training that your role requires eg. Websphere, Rational, Java, in addition to any personal development training that you may need including Presenting with Confidence, Influencing Skills for Business etc.
