Life at IBM

There's a lot more to IBM than just computers and technology. At IBM, we're developing new ways for people to think, interact and govern their lives. But first and foremost, we're about people.

Community

We were recently ranked number one for community relations programmes in a benchmarking study of 14 international firms. We have a global 'On Demand Community' employee volunteering programme which gives employees the opportunity to give their time and experience to make a real difference to the community. Over 1400 employees have signed up for this in the UK within a year of its launch - over 7% of our workforce.

Culture

IBM has a performance based culture that talented people find very attractive. Employees share a real sense of community. We work in a culture that prizes intelligence and innovation. You will find that you really are working with some of the brightest and the best people around.

Diversity

In recognition of our worldwide client and employee base, IBM has a broad definition of diversity. In addition to race, gender and physical disabilities, we respect differences in culture, lifestyle, age, religion, economic status, sexual orientation and marital status. It's extremely important to our management culture that our workforce has access to a wide variety of career development paths. Our Diversity Network Groups for women, disabled, ethnic minority and gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender employees provide a forum where members can meet and network, identify the issues that affect them and propose solutions where appropriate.

Equal Opportunities

IBM believes in a diverse workforce, reflecting both the clients we serve and the society in which we operate. Our commitment to equal opportunity is founded upon sound business judgement and our belief in respect for the individual. IBM is fully committed to equal opportunity for all employees and applicants for employment and we meet, or exceed, all the requirements placed upon us by legislation. Our aim is to create and sustain a working environment in which individual diversity is valued and all employees are able to contribute, grow and achieve their maximum potential.

Giveback

There are many opportunities to get involved in give back activities outside your normal job. In fact this is actively encouraged. Whether its running competitions for school children, visiting universities to promote IBM, helping with marketing our student & graduate schemes or getting involved in local community projects, there's something that will appeal to everyone.

Mobile working

Mobile working is highly advanced in IBM. On any given day, around 30% of employees work away from their office, typically with a client. Nearly 90% of UK employees are equipped with Thinkpad laptops and 80% of these have the ability to connect to e-mail from outside an IBM location. Increasing numbers can get online anywhere they can receive a signal via a mobile connection. Essential day to day activies, including e-mail, Internet and so on, can often be carried out from home and over 25% of the UK workforce is 'truly' mobile with no designated office desk. Instead they use 'drop in centres' in IBM offices.

Worklife balance

Something that set us apart is the degree to which we have built flexibility into our work practices. IBM is committed to creating a supportive flexible work environment, allowing employees more flexibility and control over how, where and when their work gets done. Employees are given the tools and rewarded on the value they provide - not the time they spend in the office. Some of the services offered are flexible working - including flexitime, part-time, job share, mobile working - including working from home, sabatticals and leave of absence.

Travel

Although IBM is a global company, travel opportunities to other countries are not guaranteed. It largely will depend on the role and business you work in as to whether there will be the opportunity to travel. However for the majority of our opportunities, we ask that you are flexible with regards to location.
