Graduates

Frequently Asked Questions

I need a work permit to work in the UK. Can I apply to IBM?

Due to current work permit guidelines, we cannot accept applications from graduates who require any kind of work permit to work in the UK. This includes graduates currently eligible for the UK Science & Engineering Graduates Scheme, as this only entitles non-EEA nationals to remain in the UK for 12 months after their studies - not indefinitely. As we are a global company, we have offices and graduate opportunities around the world. Click here for information on vacancies in other countries.

What are your minimum educational requirements?

We ask that applicants are expecting or have obtained a minimum of a 2:1 honours degree. Please note, we no longer require applicants to have a minimum of 300 UCAS points or equivalent.

What salary do you offer?

We offer a very competitive starting salary ranging between £25,000 and £30,000 depending on the business area you join. Some areas also offer a sign on bonus.

How long does the whole process take from when I apply?

On average you can expect the whole selection process to take between 6 - 8 weeks. This is from when you submit your application to potentially being made a job offer. Details on the process can be found if you click here.

The timings do depend on when we have selection days planned and it also assumes that there will be no technical issues with your application form or online aptitude test. Therefore, please note that in some cases it may take longer than the anticipated 6 - 8 weeks.

As such, if you are applying for a specific start date then you must apply a minimum of 2 months prior to that date, longer if you need to give notice with a current employer, although it may take longer than this for the whole process, as detailed above. We will consider your application for the next available start date if you are unable to complete the process in time for the start date you originally applied for.

Do you offer any kind of relocation package?

At the current time, IBM does not offer a relocation package.

Where will I be based if I join as a consultant?

You will be based in our Southbank office in London, however you will often be expected to work away from London on a client site. When you are based away from home, IBM will provide alternative accommodation arrangements for you eg. a hotel and will provide travel and subsistence expenses.

Can I be based anywhere in the UK?

The short answer to this is no. We require our graduates to be flexible in terms of where they will work. As a lot of the work is client facing you may need to be based on a client site. Graduates joining as Software Developers are normally based in Hursley, near Winchester. Those joining Finance are normally based in Portsmouth.

I don't have a technical degree, is it worth me applying to IBM?

IBM will consider applications from people with any degree background. What we ask though is that you can demonstrate the core competencies that we look for including a passion for the area you are applying to.

What happens at a first round selection day?

It depends on which business you have applied to. You can normally expect to take part in group activities and complete written tests. You will be given a presentation about the opportunities and you may also have the opportunity to chat to some recent graduate hires.

What happens at an assessment centre?

Again, it depends on which business you have applied to. However, most contain a number of group exercises - some task solving and some discussion based. You will also take part in some individual exercises - either in the form of a presentation or a written exercise. You can also expect to have at least one interview.

When will I find out if I have been successful?

We aim to let all candidates know if they have passed or failed an assessment centre, or first round selection day, within 10 working days.

If I am unsuccessful, when can I reapply for a job with IBM?

If you are unsuccessful at any stage of the process then you can reapply 12 months after your initial application to us. If during the selection process we feel that you would be better suited to another business area, then we will offer this to you as an option.
