As part of this, you’ll work directly with your management team to chart your career path – fast-tracking your opportunities for promotions and training. Once you’ve completed the program, we’ll work with you to find the specialism that best fits your skills and career goals. While making sure there’s room to balance your work with your life, of course.

Take a look at the different roles for a bit more detail.

What do we do? We are helping to bring clean water to third world countries; championing efforts to combat climate change; helping traffic flow more freely; and helping consumers get more from mobile technology. A lot more than your average organisation, wouldn’t you agree?

The Consulting Experience

Throughout April 2014 IBM hosted a series of three-day invite-only events for undergraduates, offering the chance to explore our world and gain rare insight into life as an IBM consultant. The events were designed to demonstrate the inspiring world in which we work and enabled the candidates to show their true potential.

Business Consultant | £30,000

What the role involves

Business and technology. These are the areas our consultants excel in – working closely with clients to explore complicated challenges, offering crystal-clear advice and developing solutions.

As a Business Consultant, you will focus on various aspects of our clients’ business, including strategy and processes, asset management, transformational projects and organisation and people change. The work tends to be project-based, and typically your assignments will last 3-9 months. After that, you’ll move to another assignment (and often another client) to gain exposure to different aspects of our work.

As your skills and experience grow, you’ll help deliver solutions for our clients’ most challenging business problems. You could develop as a generalist consultant or specialise in one area, ultimately becoming one of our next generation of Business Analysts, Project Managers or industry specialists.

Application process

The selection process

Our process has been designed not only for us to understand if you are right for us, but also for you to understand if we are right for you. So, take every opportunity you can to ask questions along the way.

STEP 1 – Submit your application

There are 3 parts to your application. The first is to complete the online application form which asks for personal details as well as information about your education and work experience. You will then have to upload the IBM CV template and a specific Strategic Analytics Consulting Form.

The Strategic Analytics Consulting Form is a series of questions covering the skills and attributes that we look for and asks you to give examples to demonstrate these. You can use examples from any aspect of your life - school, college, university, hobbies, charity work, work experience etc.

Download the IBM Strategic Analytics Consulting Application Form:

STEP 2 – Online Test

If your application is successful through the initial screening phase then we will invite you to take an online computer aptitude test (CAT) - the IBM IPAT test.

The IBM IPAT test has been developed to test logical reasoning and the ability to process information quickly. All the instructions are included in the email that will be sent to you inviting you to take the test.

The test itself is divided into three sections, however, you will only be asked to complete two of the three sections. You can choose to take these in either one or two sittings. You will have seven days to complete the two sections before your password expires.

The test can be adjusted for anyone that needs a reasonable adjustment and you will be asked to self select whether you need this when you log on for the first time.

On successful completion of the IPAT you will be required to complete verbal reasoning and numerical tests online. If you are successful at this stage, your application will be fully screened by one of our business managers.

STEP 3 – CV Review

If you achieve the required scores in the online tests, your CV will be reviewed by business leaders. At that stage, if you have demonstrated the relevant skills, competencies and character traits we believe are important for our business and for success in the role, you will be invited to attend for an interview.

STEP 4 – First round selection day

You’ll take part in a group exercise, complete a short confirmatory IPAT test and have an interview. This is not just an opportunity for us to find out more about you, it’s also an opportunity for you to find out more about us. To ensure the role we will potentially offer you is what you want, and also that you have the specific skills that we require. Really make sure you showcase yourself, and be relaxed!

STEP 5 – Assessment Centre

Assessment Centres are designed so that we can observe you taking part in a number of activities to assess the competencies we believe are important for our business. They vary depending on the role you have applied for, however you can expect to take part in further group activities, interviews and case studies.
