FAQs
-
What are the entry requirements?
You must be taking a pre university gap year. The placements are extremely challenging, so you need to be prepared to take on a role of this type.
-
Where will I be based?
IBM's main locations are North Harbour (near Portsmouth) Hursley (near Winchester), Warwick, Basingstoke, Farnborough, Greenock (Scotland), Manchester, South Bank (Inner London) and Bedfont (Outer London). In addition, IBM does work out of a number of client sites around the country where positions are also available. Positions on the Futures Gap Year Programme can be based all over the UK and a high amount of flexibility with regards to your base location is required.
-
Are expenses covered for attending the selection centres?
Reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed for travelling to and from selection centres. If you have any queries regarding travel, please contact the UK Recruitment Representative who invited you to the Selection Centre.
-
Can IBM help me with finding accommodation?
If you are offered a position with IBM we will be able to provide you with details of other scheme members who are also looking for accommodation at the same location as you. We will also be able to provide you with contact details for local letting agencies, and a leaflet on your base location, giving you information on amenities available in the local area.
-
How long will my placement last?
The IBM Futures Gap Year Programme Placement lasts between 9 and 12 months.
-
How many days holiday will I receive?
You will receive 25 days holiday per year. If you are with us for part of a year, your holiday entitlement will be worked out on a pro rata basis.
-
What are my future career opportunities?
Your IBM Futures Gap Year Programme can have a significant impact on your future IBM career opportunities. The people you meet, and the impression you create during your gap year really help with graduate job prospects. This really means that your gap year is as much as you make of it.

How does the placement with Raleigh International work?
During your induction you will receive presentations on a number of different options for the final three months of your placement. You will then have a month to make your decision on which option you wish to take and let IBM know. If you choose a Raleigh placement then you will need to start fundraising immediately, although IBM will provide all excellent performers with a bursary of £1500 which will help you reach your target. You need to be aware that if you decide to take up the opportunity of travelling with Raleigh International then it is you who makes the commitment to Raleigh, and not IBM.
-
What happens if I don't want to do a placement with Raleigh International?
We understand that the Raleigh International experience may not suit all students, which is why we provide a number of different options for the final three months of your gap year. If you do not wish to take up the opportunity to work with Raleigh International you will be given the option of remaining at IBM (either in the UK or abroad) for the final three months of your gap year; you can choose to work on a charity project based in the UK, or alternatively leave IBM to go travelling independently.
-
