Building Futures
Building Futures projects are designed as a development programme for our female IBM employees. They are also a significant giveback opportunity. The projects present a major physical challenge (in the form of the physical building) for the team, as well as an opportunity for the sharing of business skills and experience, leading to ‘building’ of lives. There is a focus on geographical areas of deprivation, so that the team is working in places of greatest need. Projects concentrate on community organisations and support women who are under-represented, socially excluded or ‘hard to reach’.
The benefits are widespread – for the community there is committed labour, offered freely to support a real need and provide a morale boost as volunteers share in the construction process. The team involved are given a once-in-a-lifetime experience, as well as increased confidence in their own ability to influence change, and a chance to develop a greater understanding of themselves. For IBM, Building Futures projects offer the development of talent, especially in a non-standard way, and demonstrates IBM’s commitment to its diversity agenda goals.

Building Futures 2007 and 2008
In 2007, IBM organised a Building Futures project in the village of Willowfontein in Kwazulu Natal, near Durban in South Africa. The project took 20 women to the village where they worked with the local community to build 2 houses for orphans of AIDs over a one week period. Although the participants have now returned, they still continue to contribute to the project through donations towards college fees.
