What browsers can I use to apply to IBM?
IBM strives to ensure that its web site is compatible with browsers used by the majority of users.

This means that all intended functionality is available, and that on-screen display contains all necessary information, though the screen layout may differ slightly between different browsers.

IBM recommends the use of the latest version of an industry-standard browser that supports HTML v4, SSL and is java-enabled.

In practice, IBM will actively support the following browsers for functionality and information display:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer, versions 5.5 and 6.0
  • Netscape Navigator, versions 6.2 and 7.0
  • Opera, version 6.0
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 for Macintosh

Unfortunately, some older browsers contain various issues which limit the user's ability to fully utilise IBM's service, or do not support certain features - for example, limited unicode language support, and therefore we regret that as from 1st January 2003, IBM will no longer support browser versions below those listed above.

I use Mozilla that's Netscape - isn't it?
The latest versions of Netscape [6 and above] are based upon Mozilla, which is a browser based upon open Internet standards. Although IBM doesn't officially support Mozilla, there have not been any major reported issues with this browser. In most instances it can be assumed that if a resolution applies to Netscape 6.x then it will apply to Mozilla.

What does This Page Cannot Be Displayed mean?
Before calling or emailing to report a problem, please be sure to verify that your Internet connection and browser are working properly. You can do this by simply trying to access one or two other sites on the Internet such as IBM or BBC news. If most are not available, you may wish to restart your Internet connection and browser, and try accessing the online form again. If still unable to connect to other sites, you will need to contact your Internet Service Provider to help you resolve the issue.

Rarely, this issue can be the results of a security configuration issue please see the section on security channel errors.

I receive the message, There has been an error in the secure channel support. How can I resolve this?
In order to ensure the security of any transactions on the Internet a protocol called Secure Socket Layers (SSL) has been developed. SSL is a protocol that has been developed for transmitting private documents via the Internet. SSL works by using a public key to encrypt data that's transferred over an SSL connection. Both Netscape and Internet Explorer support SSL, and many websites use the protocol to obtain confidential user information, such as credit card numbers. As SSL relies on the use of certificates you must ensure that your browser is capable of handling the certificate provided by this site. The current standard, for encrypted transactions, is 128 bit and this is the standard that we adhere to. Some older browsers either do not or cannot support this. As a result we would advise that you visit the website of the manufacturer of your preferred browser to check for updates.
To ensure that SSL support is activated for those browsers that we officially support:

Internet Explorer 5.x or 6.x

  • From the browser's Tools menu select Internet Options...
  • Select the Advanced tab.
  • Scroll down to the Security section.
  • Ensure that there is a tick in Use SSL 2.0 and Use SSL 3.0.
  • Click on OK to accept the pages.
  • Click Ctrl + R to refresh the page.

Netscape 6.x

  • From Netscape Navigators Edit menu select Preferences...
  • Expand the Privacy and Security options by clicking on the '+' to the left.
  • Click on SSL from the list and ensure that there is a tick in the boxes for Enable SSL version 2.0 and Enable SSL version 3.0.
  • Reload the current Page

Opera

  • From the browsers File menu select Preferences…
  • Click on Security
  • Ensure that Enable SSL 2.0 and Enable SSL 2.0 have a tick in them

To check that your browser does support 128-bit encryption do the following:

Internet Explorer 5.x or 6.x

  • From the Help menu select About Internet Explorer
  • Amongst the information in the box that appears is Cypher Strength
  • If this says 128-bit then your browser has its encryption strength set correctly.
  • If this states anything less than 128-bit then you must update your browser. Visit the Microsoft website:
Internet Explorer High Encryption Pack Homepage

Netscape 6.x

  • All current versions of Netscape support 128-bit encryption.

Opera 6.x

  • All supported versions of Opera support 128-bit encryption

Macintosh Internet Explorer 5.x

  • Click on the Apple menu.
  • Select About Internet Explorer.
  • Click on Support.
  • The Encryption box should contain the current encryption level.

I've reached the form yet there is no text on it, how do I apply?
This issue affects Internet Explorer users. Within Internet Explorer there is the option of setting the 'Default Security' level. If this has been set to 'High' then certain features will be turned off. The result is that the browser will not display the content of a website if it deems that it may be harmful, classifying it as 'unsafe'. This isn't necessarily the case, the browser has simply turned some features off. To be able to view the online form:

Internet Explorer 5.x or 6.x

  • From the browser's Tools menu select Internet Options...
  • Select the Security tab
  • Select the Internet zone by clicking on the picture of the Earth
  • In the section entitled 'Security Level for this zone' click on 'Custom Level'
  • A new window will open. In the section entitles 'Reset custom settings' ensure that the dropdown called Reset to is set to Medium then click on Reset.
  • Click on OK to accept the changes and press Ctrl + R to refresh the page.
