What is Extreme Blue?

There are summer internships, and then there’s Extreme Blue. Think of it as the opportunity to run your own business, but with the support, expertise and backing of one of the worlds leading technology companies. Extreme Blue at IBM isn’t your average summer internship. It’s 12 weeks of intense creative thinking.

Working in a small team of students, you’ll tackle a real business problem. Your task? Develop an idea to solve it – one that no one else has thought of – and then, turn that idea into a real product. When the 12 weeks are up, you’ll showcase it to our executives, business partners and clients. Expectations will be high and the results will be scrutinised closely. So, it’s not an easy ride – but we guarantee it’ll be an incredible experience.

What opportunities do we offer?

 

You’ll work in a team with 4 other students - one business student and three technical students. In these teams your challenge will be to develop the technology and business plan that will bring a new product to life for IBM.

Business roles

You’ll be the one managing the project, keeping the team on schedule and meeting targets and objectives. That’ll involve dealing directly with clients, determining the features your solution will need and putting together a watertight business case.

Business roles are suited to:

 
People studying a business type degree.

 
Natural born leaders and expert planners.

What do we look for?

You need to be studying for a business related degree and to have excellent leadership, communication, planning and teamwork skills.
 

Technology roles

You’ll be part of the team that designs, architects, develops and tests an innovative new proof-of-concept for your client. You’ll work with some true technological geniuses here, too – which will give you the chance to expand your own skills.

Technology roles are suited to:

People studying a technical/​scientific/​numerical degree, with an aptitude for programming.

True problem solvers – those who can analyse tricky issues and work in teams to solve them.

What do we look for?

You should be studying a technical, scientific or numerical degree and have excellent analytical, problem solving and teamwork skills - along with a talent for programming.

What kind of projects will you work on?

It really could be anything. Here are a couple of great examples:

Digital Front Office

Changing market and technology trends are creating the need for Digital Service Providers to dramatically transform their businesses to remain relevant, competitive and profitable. Customers are more informed than ever. They demand greater quality and truly engaging experiences, all at competitive pricing and at their fingertips - the flick of a virtual switch on their mobile devices. The DFO project is part of a broader initiative to leverage IBM's deep expertise in Mobile, Cloud Analytics and Social to create an offering that engages users through social media, with competitive insights gained through analytics and personalized users experience anywhere, on any device.

Employee Voice

Employee Voice aims to tap into the talent within an organization by soliciting input on a specific business problem. Employee engagement and talent retention are huge areas of interest for HR and this project aims to develop, test and measure the value of a new solution/concept, by using analytics to provide reporting with data visualization to deliver immediate insights based on survey responses. This structured feedback links to an action planning module - facilitating the business to act fast to make real improvements - leading to improved employee satisfaction, engagement and retention.

Extreme Blue is the best chance for students to go through software product development, you will work with the top students, get guidance from IBM experts nf all fields, and see how your crazy idea come true! I am currently a software engineer in IBM Curam. During my EB period, I worked with some developers in Curam, and was impressed by the idea and impact of this product. So I learnt a lot of IBM Curam and I was offered the opportunity work there after the internship

The Extreme Blue internship was a great experience and fun at the same time. I meet fantastic people. Not only have I learnt new technologies, but I also have been involved in the process of creation of a product from the beginning to the end. I worked with variety of people, who are experts in their domains. I also had the great opportunity to see how the good collaboration and teamwork is important. Currently I'm working as a Software Developer in IBM. The knowledge I gained from Extreme Blue made it much simpler for me to make an impact to the product I'm developing.

I would recommend the Extreme Blue program wholeheartedly. During my three months at IBM, I gained insight into real-world software development that I could never have gained otherwise through college; dealing with real business constraints, processes (agile development) and delivery of a working product. On top of this, being surrounded by experts in the field who are more than willing to help you improve your skills every day is an opportunity any passionate developer should jump at. I'm currently back with IBM for my 6 month INTRA work placement for the Computer Applications course in Dublin City University. My participation in Extreme Blue was absolutely instrumental in returning; through the contacts I had made during those three months, I was able to get in touch directly and arrange to work in a role much more suitable to my career interests than anything I had seen through the standard INTRA college portal. The contacts and skills that you leave Extreme Blue with place you in a unique position of leverage for any further opportunities afterwards, and are a massively important benefit that shouldn't be overlooked when considering applying!
