Name: Albert K Job Title: Senior Consultant - IBM Deutschland GmbH Business Areas: Business Consulting Services Joined: 2002 Age: 33
How would you describe your current role?
I spend much of my time based at the client site working on specific projects. Currently I am involved in a project to develop the logic of accounting systems. My main responsibilities are for the booking and payment issues and working towards implementing an IT system for occupational pension schemes. My role means I consult with the project leader at the client site and feed back to our team what needs to be tested, developed or improved. Through projects such as this I have become a key contact within IBM for occupational pension schemes.
How have you found the support at IBM?
It wasn't until July of 2003 that IBM Germany had a recognised GLBT Task Force (EAGLE) in place. Since then I have been heavily involved in establishing an official presence here for EAGLE - a global database of GLBT employees that can be joined via IBM's intranet. Establishing EAGLE here has meant getting support from the board, making contact with established chapters in the US and communication with various members within Germany. As a result of these developments, I am very optimistic about IBM Germany's commitment to offering a non-discriminating work environment with equal rights for GLBT employees.
What has your personal experience as a gay person been?
I've never told anyone directly about my sexuality, but most people I work with have worked it out naturally anyway. I didn't feel the need to tell anyone. I did have to come out to my boss when I requested to take a lead role in establishing EAGLE in Germany. But I have felt nothing but support and encouragement from all my colleagues. It's not a big deal, I live my life and they accept me as I am.
