This diploma thesis shall contribute to a new project on a high availability solution for Linux on System z – the high-end enterprise server line of IBM.
IBM System z mainframes enjoy the good reputation of being high available. We have the same requirement for the Linux operation system running on System z.
A crucial aspect of every high availability solution is the detection and analysis of failures. Even if the underlying hardware is very strong, sometimes it is not obvious which task triggered a failure in the operating system. Especially to the time the failure is detected, the reason for that failure may be occurred long time before. This is in particular true for I/O errors. The goal of this work is to analyze and capture I/O errors (for disks I/O) that are detected by the Linux device drivers and associate them with the application that triggered the I/O.
