The consultants who face the challenges

Interviewee: Pieter Nijsse, Application Architect

If you can't find a suitable job within IBM, you can't find it anywhere.

What makes my job special:
What I like very much about IBM Global Business Services is the fact that it provides so many career opportunities - there are all kinds of jobs at all kinds of levels.
Here, you can really grow into being an expert in the field that you like.

And then, if you want, you can move on to the next field.

What my job is like:
I work on a very conceptual level to create the blueprints that will later become the 'structure' that solves the clients' needs.

In terms of process, I first speak with the clients to understand their situation and desires. Based on that conversation, I work on my own plans and designs. I then translate these ideas for an IT Specialist, who will lay the foundation and build the applications structure on top.

What sorts of projects I've worked on:
I joined IBM in December of 1996.

Since then, I have worked in two areas: first on internal projects within IBM and then for external clients.

I started as a Developer; within a year I became a Designer. I then became an Architect, working on a global level. IBM has really given me the space and support I needed to grow!

My biggest challenge so far:
The biggest thing I learned was to make sure I communicate everything precisely. I work with people all over the world. I have to think: 'Who is my audience? What does he/she understand? What does he/she need to know?'

My word to new consultants:
There's a nice balance here: it is at the same time an inspiring and friendly environment. Colleagues are true teammates.
