IBM NGN-Factory – Overview

Telecommunications companies are moving in a convergent market, characterized by increasing globalization and the dissolution of business area segmentation within the telecommunications industry. Measures to improve customer relations are becoming increasingly important as margins on telecommunications products decline.

Operational expenditure (OPEX) for existing networks needs to be reduced and legacy technology at the end of its lifecycle needs to be replaced. New technologies need to be implemented quickly and economically and integrated into the infrastructure and business processes of telecommunications companies.

In this respect, network transformation and the convergence of networks and telephony products all come to the fore. The same applies for large companies in other sectors that want to set up their own IP-based network using new communications technology.

Description of solution

The IBM NGN-Factory developed by IBM Global Business Services is based on the architectural reference model defined by ETSI TISPAN and 3GPP for Next Generation Networks (NGN).

Highlights

The NGN-Factory supports transformation and convergence strategies linked with the implementation of a NGN, which permit the migration of telecommunications business into the future.

Components and interfaces produced by the NGN-Factory in accordance with official standards (e.g. for the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) from the ETSI TISPAN NGN reference architecture) enable products from different manufacturers to be linked, thus permitting other applications based on NGN-Factory services (e.g. call control) to be included in the portfolio.

Using the IMS-based NGN-Factory adds value to telecommunications companies, as it provides technology that enables the paradigm switch to NGN-based application solutions.

Central to the NGN-Factory offer is its SIP-based technology to replace the class 5 switches or local exchanges in circuit-switched telephony networks. Furthermore, the IMS-based NGN-Factory also makes it possible to absorb the business model of a mobile telephony operator into the SIP-based world of the fixed network operator. There is consequently a solution available for a mobile future, provided by UMTS, IP and SIP.

The NGN-Factory’s innovation results from its creation of additional basic concepts, based on expertise within the industry, that have been incorporated into the solution, which enable telecommunications operating companies to undertake the NGN transformation, thereby adding value to the future of the company.

NGN-Factory software is also subject to continuous further development. Thus it has already been possible to implement functions such as emergency calls, especially with regard to roaming VoIP use, VoIP Desktop Integration, presence services, web-initiated calls and much more from the range of business ideas made possible by a NGN.
