Stuttgart, 22. September 2008: IBM hat ein Hardware-basiertes Verschlüsselungstool vorgestellt, das Daten auf der Festplatte eines Servers sichert. Einmal verschlüsselt, sind die Daten geschützt, auch wenn die Festplatte entsorgt oder gestohlen wird. Diese Lösung eignet sich besonders für kleine und mittelständische Unternehmen, die über begrenzte IT-Ressourcen verfügen und bietet ihnen einen einfachen Weg, annähernd ein vergleichbares Sicherheitsniveau wie in großen Unternehmen gebräuchlich zu implementieren.
Festplatten sind Serverkomponenten, die von Unternehmen jeder Größe genutzt werden, um wichtige Unternehmensdaten zu speichern. Während die meisten kleinen und mittelständischen Unternehmen ihre Daten vor Hackern und anderen externen Angriffen abgeschirmt haben, schützt die neue System x-Sicherheitslösung Unternehmen nun auch besser bei Diebstahl oder Verlust einer Festplatte, indem die Daten auf einer internen Serverfestplatte verschlüsselt werden.
Kleinere Unternehmen verfügen oft über keinen eigenen Serverraum oder ein Rechenzentrum, um die Systeme an einem Ort zu zentralisieren. Aus diesem Grund ist es wichtig, die Daten auf den einzelnen Festplatten zu sichern. Sogar in abgeschlossenen Rechenzentren können Festplatten für unauthorisierte Mitarbeiter zugänglich sein oder manipuliert werden.
Die Rufschädigung im Zuge des Datenmissbrauchs kann laut Ponemon-Institut fatale Auswirkungen auf den Leumund eines Unternehmens und seinen Gewinn haben und durchschnittlich bis zu 14 Millionen US-Dollar kosten. 31 Prozent der Kunden beenden sogar nach dem Bekanntwerden eines Datenverlusts ihre Zusammenarbeit mit einem Unternehmen. Das IBM System x VAULT-Adaptertool bietet kleinen und mittelständischen Unternehmen einen einfachen und kosteneffektiven Weg, ihre Daten auf einer Festplatte zu sichern. Dadurch können Unternehmen vor dem Verlust sensibler Daten geschützt werden, während sie gleichzeitig die Kosten für die Einhaltung gesetzlicher Auflagen zum Schutz von Kundendaten reduzieren können.
Der VAULT-Adapter lässt sich durch eine Anleitung Schritt für Schritt leicht installieren und ist mit einem Listenpreis von 875 Euro eine kostengünstige Möglichkeit, Unternehmensdaten zu schützen und die eventuell hohen Kosten eines Datenverlusts zu vermeiden. Alle Festplatten werden irgendwann entsorgt, wenn Server ihre maximale Lebensdauer erreicht haben. Trotzden ist es nahezu unmöglich, alle Daten endgültig von der Festplatte zu löschen. Der IBM VAULT-Adapter sichert die Daten, da diese nicht ohne den richtigen Schlüssel entschlüsselt werden können. Sogar bei Diebstahl einer physischen Platte oder eines ganzen Servers können die Daten geschützt werden.
Das Tool wird bei IBM und IBM Geschäftspartnern erhältlich sein.
Datenverschlüsselung ist ein rechenintensiver Prozess, der eine relativ hohe Leistung voraussetzt. Der IBM VAULT-Adapter ist bisher das einzige Tool, das Hardware-basierte Datenverschlüsselung auf der Festplatte eines Servers anbietet, um anders als die Software-basierte Verschlüsselung die Serverleistung nicht zu beeinflussen.
Die Ankündigung basiert auf dem IBM Commitment Mainframe-inspirierte Fähigkeiten für Standardserver zu entwickeln und zu bauen.

Data Encryption Solution Provides Government-Level Security; Demonstrates IBM's Commitment to Innovation in x86 Market
ARMONK, NY: IBM (NYSE: IBM) announced today the industry's first hardware-based encryption tool to secure data on a server's hard drive. Once encrypted, data is well protected -- even if the hard drive is improperly disposed of or stolen. The solution is particularly useful to small and medium businesses with limited IT resources, providing them a simple way to implement the same level of security commonly used by government agencies.
Hard drives are server components that businesses of all sizes use to store important company data. While most small and medium businesses have taken steps to guard the data on their systems against hacking and other outside attacks, the new System x security solution for the first time protects businesses from theft or loss of a hard drive by encrypting data on internal server hard drives.
Smaller companies often do not have a server room or datacenter and locate their systems in the open, so it's critical that the data on their drives is protected. Even in locked datacenters, hard drives can be vulnerable to unauthorized employee access or "inside jobs" from disgruntled employees.
Loss of reputation following a data breach can be disastrous for a company's image and bottom line, with an average cost to the company of $14 million, according to the Ponemon Institute. Further, 31 percent of customers terminate their relationship with an organization that notifies them of a data breach. (1)
The IBM® System x™ VAULT adapter tool provides small and medium businesses with an easy, cost-effective way to secure their data on the hard drive. As a result, businesses can be protected from the liabilities of loss of sensitive data while potentially reducing the costs of complying with regulations that require companies to protect consumer information so it can't be read or reconstructed.
The VAULT adapter is easy to install with step-by-step prompts and, at around $1,000, is an inexpensive way to achieve enterprise class data protection and avoid the potentially huge costs of a security breach. When installing the tool, clients can simply designate a security key -- essentially a password -- that becomes the only way data can ever be accessed. The technology offers four levels of security to meet individual client requirements.
All hard drives are eventually disposed of when servers reach end of life, but it's virtually impossible to erase all data from the drive so it's irretrievable. The IBM VAULT adapter locks the data so it can't be unencrypted without the proper key, eliminating the cost of disposing of a hard drive or allowing it to be resold. Even if a physical drive or the entire server is stolen, data can be protected.
