IBM stellt neue und verbesserte Speicher-Virtualisierungslösungen vor
Erhöhte Effizienz und Kosteneinsparungsmöglichkeiten / Virtualisierung bei Platten- und Bandspeicherprodukten verbessert
Armonk/Stuttgart, 23. Oktober 2007 - IBM hat neue und verbesserte Speichervirtualisierungslösungen für Platten- und Bandspeicher vorgestellt. Die aktuelle Ankündigung umfaßt den neuen IBM System Storage N series Virtual File Manager und Verbesserungen bei der IBM Virtualization Engine TS7520-Bandlösung.
In einem jüngst veröffentlichten Report der Analystengruppe IDC wurde vorhergesagt, daß Virtualisierung in den nächsten fünf Jahren ein wichtiger Wettbewerbsfaktor in der Speicherindustrie werden kann. Davon können Veränderungen in Speichersystemarchitekturen ausgehen, die signifikante Investitionen in neue Speichersoftwarelösungen auslösen können und die gegenwärtige Wettbewerbslandschaft möglicherweise stark verändern.
Laut dem IDC Report wird der Einsatz von Block-, File- und Bandvirtualisierung eine Schlüsselrolle dabei spielen, Speicherressourcen über multiple Speicherklassen und Anwendungen zu poolen. Dabei kann auch die Komplexität beim Konfigurieren von Speichersystemen und beim Verwalten von Backups sinken.*
Der neue IBM System Storage N series Virtual File Manager (VFM) wird in Enterprise- und Migration-Editionen eingeführt. Dieses File-Virtualisierungsangebot liefert eine umfassende Lösung für das Verwalten von unstrukturierten Dateidaten quer über das Unternehmen hinweg.
Die VFM-Software unterstützt die Virtualisierung von Dateisystemen, die auf UNIX-, Linux-, und Windows-Fileservern sowie auf der IBM N series liegen können. Damit handelt es sich um eine Unified Storage-Lösung für Kunden vom Midrange bis zu Großanwendern. VFM stellt eine Non-disruptive-Datenmanagement-Funktionalität für Server- und Speicherkonsolidierung, Migration, Remote Office Data Management und Disaster Recovery bereit. Dies ermöglicht einen kontinuierlichen Benutzerzugang zu den Daten und verbesserte Businesskontinuität, indem auch im Disaster-Fall ununterbrochener User-Zugang zu den Daten möglich wird, oder auch parallel zu einer Storage-Konsolidierung oder Datenmigration.
VFM bietet diese Funktionalität durch ein automatisiertes, policy-basiertes Datenmanagement, das einen Global Namespace nützt, der verteilte Dateien auf UNIX-, Linux-, Windows- und IBM N series Speichersystemen aggregiert, um eine einzelne, konsolidierte Sicht auf alle Dateien zu liefern, die auf multiplen Dateiservern innerhalb eines Unternehmensnetzwerks liegen. Beispielsweise haben Windows-User üblicherweise auf manuelle Weise Verbindungen zu multiplen Fileservern einzurichten, um Zugang zu ihren Daten zu erhalten. Mit VFM müssen Benutzer sich nur mit dem einen Netzwerk-Laufwerk verbinden, das ihnen Folder und Subfolder mit all ihren Dateien präsentiert.
VFM adressiert drei große Herausforderungen, die mit Dateisystemen in Verbindung stehen:
- Erstens eliminiert VFM die Notwendigkeit, manuell multiple Netzwerklaufwerkmappings zu rekonfigurieren, wenn Dateien von einem Server auf einen anderen migriert werden.
- Zweitens befähigt VFM Speicheradministratoren, Daten auf Fileservern hinzuzufügen, zu konsolidieren und zu migrieren, ohne Userzugang zu unterbrechen.
- Und drittens hilft VFM IT-Managern, ihr Filesystem-Management zu vereinfachen, den Datenzugriff zu verbessern und ihre Datenmanagementkosten zu senken, da jedes Speichergerät, das einzeln verwaltet werden muss, die Verwaltungskosten in verteilten Dateispeichersystemen stark nach oben treiben kann.
Die VFM Enterprise Edition ist eine Lösung für Dateidatenmanagement in heterogenen Kundenumgebungen. Die VFM Migration Edition ist eine Untermenge der Enterprise Edition, die sich auf Migrationsfunktionen konzentriert.
Die VFM Enterprise und Migration Edition werden voraussichtlich verfügbar ab 26. Oktober - zu einem US-Startpreis von 2000$ für die Enterprise Edition und $1200 für die Migration Edition.
IBM Virtualization Engine TS7520
Zusätzlich hat IBM Verbesserungen bei der Virtualization Engine TS7520 vorgestellt, einem Mitglied der Familie der IBM Virtual Tape-Lösungen.
Die TS7520 bietet jetzt 750-GB-Laufwerke zur Senkung der Speicherkosten und eine erhöhte Skalierbarkeit mit einer Maximumkapazität von jetzt 1,3 Petabyte. Die TS7520 unterstützt nun auch die verschlüsselungsfähigen LTO Generation 4-Bandlaufwerke für höhere Kapazität und verbesserte Datensicherheit. Die verbesserte TS7520 stellt eine umfassende Bandspeichervirtualisierungslösung bereit, ermöglicht höhere Business Continuity mit verbesserten Backup- und Restore-Funktionen und unterstützt ein verbessertes Information Lifecycle Management.
Die verbesserte IBM Virtualization Engine TS7520 wird voraussichtlich verfügbar ab 7. Dezember 2007 - zu einem US-Startpreis ab $105000.

ARMONK, NY - 23 Oct 2007: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced new and enhanced storage virtualization products for disk and tape storage, increasing IBM's lead in storage virtualization innovations. Today's announcement includes the addition of the new IBM System Storage N series Virtual File Manager™ and enhancements to the IBM Virtualization Engine TS7520 tape solution.

IBM adds to its virtualization portfolio today with the announcement of the IBM System Storage N series Virtual File Manager (VFM®) in both Enterprise and Migration Editions. This file virtualization offering provides a comprehensive solution for managing unstructured file data across an enterprise. VFM software supports the virtualization of file systems residing on UNIX, Linux, Windows file servers and on IBM N series -- a unified storage solution that meets the needs of customers from the midrange up to the large enterprise. VFM provides non-disruptive data management functionality for server and storage consolidation, migration, remote office data management and disaster recovery. This provides continuous user access to data, which is intended to ensure business continuity, by providing uninterrupted user access to data in the event of a disaster, or while performing storage consolidation or data migration.
VFM provides all of this functionality through automated policy-based data management leveraging a global namespace that aggregates distributed files located on UNIX, Linux, Windows and IBM N series storage systems to present a single, consolidated view of all files residing on multiple file servers within an enterprise's network. For example, Windows users usually have to manually setup connections to multiple file servers to access their data, but with VFM users only have to connect to the one network drive, which presents folders and subfolders containing all their files. VFM addresses three major challenges associated with file systems. First, VFM eliminates the need to manually re-configure multiple network drive mappings when files are migrated from one server to another. Second, VFM enables storage administrators to add, consolidate and migrate data on file servers without disrupting users access. And third, because each storage device that needs to be managed independently can greatly increases the administrative costs in distributed file storage environments, VFM helps IT managers simplify file system management, enhance data access, and reduce their data management costs.
VFM Enterprise Edition is a solution for file data management in heterogeneous customer environments, and VFM Migration Edition is a subset of Enterprise Edition that is focused solely on migration functions.
The IBM System Storage N series Virtual File Manager Enterprise and Migration Editions will be generally available on October 26, 2007, at a starting price of $2,000 for the Enterprise Edition and $1,200 for the Migration Edition.
IBM Virtualization Engine TS7520
Additionally, IBM today announced enhancements to its Virtualization Engine TS7520, a member of its family of virtual tape solutions. The IBM Virtualization Engine TS7520 now offers 750 GB disk drives to lower overall storage costs; and enhanced scalability with maximum capacity increased to 1.3 Petabytes. In addition, the TS7520 will now support IBM's encryption capable LTO Gen 4 tape drives to provide higher capacity and improve data security. The enhanced TS7520 supplies a comprehensive tape virtualization solution for customers, provides improved business continuity with enhanced backup and restore functions, and supports improved information lifecycle management and infrastructure simplification.
The enhanced IBM Virtualization Engine TS7520 will be generally available on December 7, 2007, at a starting price of $105,000.
